Hi Can You Please Reduce The Size Of the search bar or is there a way to do it myself

@niels9001

@Agent24015 The search bar itself, or the amount of results? What's not working for you in terms of dimensions (e.g. height / width or both?)

can you take a screenshot of your desktop or tell us the resolution / DPI settings you have?

For the image to be sent, you have to do it via the web client. Thanks.

You need to use the website. Attaching images via email doesn’t work on GitHub.

Issue is that doesn’t tell me what your dpi and resolution is.

Helps in being sure we can simulate sizing on our computers.

Hi @crutkas ,
My dpi setting is 100% and my screen resolution is 1366 x 768

I agree, it's far too large by default. Here's a screenshot of my desktop. 1920x1080, 100% DPI. I think if it was ~80% as large by default it would look far better.

What would really be great would be to add a size slider to its settings, allowing you to make it bigger or smaller at will (doesn't need to be a continuous slider, 3-5 notches in either direction would be sufficient; not sure if you'd want a linear progression on the various sizes, or something else...you'd probably want to mess with the values a bit). I remember using Launchy extensively back in the Vista/7 days, and I seem to recall it had something like that, though I may be mistaken.

This work is not planned for .19. Maybe .20 or .21. Right now we are focused on improving search and stability for PT Run.

Search bar size isn't the problem ‒ it's the limit it imposes on the size of the result list.
IMO 80% - 90% of current size would be fine, thus capable to show ~15 entries.
Making the size==capacity customizable is common practice from what I have seen.

In Quicktabs I decided to provide a larger overview, capable to show ~30 tabs.

Ah, I see this is your first issue @Agent24015 :)
Don't worry, you'll get an email about every comment/change here, so you'll see it when the PowerToys developers make progress/fix it, no need to do anything extra!

What if we'd have a ComboBox in Settings that would allow for different result item templates?

For example, this could be the Compact template - smaller fonts and icon and only shows the title. The height of each row is 48px instead of 72px. So it would almost double the amount of results that could be shown.

Launcher compact

The current implementation in 0.18 could be the Extended template.

Curious to know what y'all would think!

The large search box is similar to macOS's Spotlight feature - if it was a standard sized textbox, it would get lost on the screen.

image

Eventually it would be good if there were shadows and Acrylic for the PowerRun UI - which would help a slightly smaller UI stand out when on screen.

@bkromhout Are you talking about the search field bar or results list? My concern with decreasing the height that it could be missed as @mdtauk mentioned as well - especially if no text is entered and no results are shown. Width could work if we make fontsizes slightly smaller for the results, since some application names can be long.

Decreasing the size of the results item makes more sense to me personally, since it would allow more results to be shown and less mouse travel.

The search results could have a setting to change the density, like with the Mail app - but I think the search box is the core UI, and should not change size. (although if enough a-typical screen sizes pop up in feedback, there is no harm in adding logic to how the size is set, based on the DPI/Scale/Resolution etc.

image

On a side note, will the search box eventually support the inking text entry UX? That is larger than standard TextBoxes at the moment.

@niels9001: Both; the entire UI is a little too large by default to my eyes. But again, only a little; if it was ~80% of its current size, I think it'd be much better. Still plenty large enough to see everything and not get lost on the screen, and it gives you room for at least 10 result items on a 1080p screen at 100% DPI scaling (currently there's only room for 9 items).

Like I said, I think both ideas are important here:

  • The size slider addresses the original concerns raised in this issue, namely that the UI is too large right now overall. And it's a good solution because it will satisfy everyone: those who like the current size, and those who don't.
  • Your suggestion of multiple view types is also a good one, but it addresses a slightly different issue: how many results you can get on screen (which is related to, but not quite the same as, the originally-stated issue).

Personally, I would love to see both of these added as options, because I think they're both great (and practical) ideas.

All I was trying to point out in my last comment was that this issue is purely about overall UI size, and that if the devs want to keep it focused on that, it might be better to move your suggestion to a different issue. I wasn't trying to discount your idea, apologies if it came across that way :)

Hi all,

I have an idea for a new powertoy / feature, something like a menu bar on top,

It will look something like this,

image

It can have themes like this image,

Please suggest what you guys think about this.

@Agent24015 That is not related to the initial ask of this issue.

Please create a new issue so it can be tracked seperatly. Or, issue #1240 is pretty similiar so you can post your mock-ups there as well.

So, I agree with @bkromhout in regards to the whole UI being a little too big. The search box, the low density of the results as they are too large for little information and have a lot of blank space. The UI being large increases the font weight too, it's a little too thick and is not pleasant at all.

PT Run is an awesome feature and refinements to the UI would make it even better. If not everyone agree with the sizing, at least the option to change it should be present.

Along with reducing the height and font size can we have list items to be shown categorically? as of now all result are shown in plain list one after another.

Proposed :

  • Reduce font and UI size overall (Event the dropdown box!)
  • Show items in categories.

Eg.

A search "Code" Shows result as below.

image

It will be more Intuitive if It were shown in categories as :

  • Apps
  • Files & Folders
  • Others

and may be each section can have its own configuration of limit of files being shown?
