Release strategy / publication / publicity, how this is measured and deemed to be successful

SmartGreenhouse utilise the following social media outlets to engage with the public and potential users:
    Instagram
    Twitter
    Facebook
    Youtube
    Github

The aim of the publicity campaign has to gain following, encourage and welcome interactions and to retain interest. The following tools have been used:

  • Daily/frequent 'Stories' on Instagram and Facebook
  • Personal hashtag, '#SmartGreenhouse'
  • Existing established and well-followed hashtags e.g. '#RaspberryPi', '#uofgeng'
  • Following and interacting with similar or opportunity-providing accounts
  • Asking for customer feedback and opinions
  • Branding through logo use, constant formatting and colour scheme

Our accounts have gained a strong follower base, attracting and retaining over 150 followers on Instagram since January. More importantly our followers engage with our posts, with almost every post attracting comments and 'stories' being watched and responded to. Most significantly is the offers of collaboration we have received.

Users can stay up to date and provide suggestions for the latest releases from SmartGreenhouse via our social media platforms. Furthermore, momentum around such release can be generated amongst followers. Our release strategy was as follows:

  • v1.0: Reads all the sensor values and uploads the data to the server
  • v2.0: Automatic response systems are operational, e.g. LEDs turn on when the UV light sensor reading is below the threshold
  • v2.1: Neater code and use of threads.

Our delivered releases have been:

  • v1.0: Reads all the sensor values and uploads the data to the server, automatic response systems are operational, e.g. LEDs turn on when the UV light sensor reading is below the threshold, and use of threads.
  • v1.1: Neater code and include file path bug fix.

A further aim of the publicity campaign is recognition from a technology/engineering publication or popular online account such as Hackaday, TNW, Wired. Now the prototype is fully complete and initial releases have been complete, attempts at this have been made using tagging, mentions and hashtags.

Users of social media or generally users would like it and share it

Social media interactions have been positive regarding interest in the project both from a development point of view and as a product. When asked, 80% of our followers showed interest in utilising or trialling the SmartGreenhouse. We believe that through a strong online presence and up-to-date user friendly Github the product would be readily shared with DIY project lovers, tech heads and gardeners alike. Please also see our User Stories for more information.
