Hello there.

Scenario when this would be used?

I'm feedbacking for PowerToys. Today Office Professional 2010 said "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable." And in File Explorer, it wouldn't show the right side of the file. Same thing with .pdf. Can you do something magic? GardenMum

Is there anything that could lead to this issue, now? Has anything changed from the past? What version is PowerToys?
Can you check if the settings for Preview Pane in PowerToys > File Explorer for related files are on or off?

This is something outside of PowerToys, we don't alter that environment variable.
