Troubleshooting
When you first open a .map file you will see a list of folders which represent the categories for different kinds of tags. Double-click on a tag to open it with the default action, or right-click and select Open With...
to choose how to open it if there are multiple actions.
- Bitmaps are under
bitmap
folder - Models are under
render_model
(Excluding Halo 1)- Halo 1 Xbox uses the
model
folder - Halo 1 PC uses the
gbxmodel
folder
- Halo 1 Xbox uses the
- BSP models are under
scenario_structure_bsp
- Sounds are under
sound
- The above tags and all others can also be opened in the meta viewer
model
folder (Halo 2+) do not contain model meshes - you need the render_model
tags.
For .s3dpak files you can find bitmaps under the Textures
folder.
If nothing happens when double-clicking a tag it means there was an error opening the tag or there is no action available for that kind of tag. You can check for errors by selecting View > Output
from the main menu.
If you are trying to open the meta viewer but nothing is happening and it does not appear in the Open With...
menu, this typically means the meta viewer has not been configured correctly or there was no xml file found for this kind of tag. Check that you have configured your Meta Viewer Settings and that there is an xml corresponding to the type of tag you are trying to open.
If you are using the Open With...
menu and do not see a plugin action available you may be looking at the wrong kind of tag or the plugin may not have been able to load. If the plugin was not loaded there will be a message in the output panel when the app starts. If this happens you may just need to update Reclaimer and/or the plugin.
For Halo CE: Anniversary you will need to decompress the map files before they can be used in Reclaimer. For any other map files this error means that this version of the game is not supported, or you may need to update Reclaimer. Maps from new flights and title updates are not automatically supported - you will need to wait until an update is available. You can also check the Compatibility page to see what files are supported.
This error means the tag details exist in the map but there is no actual resource data for it. You will be able to view it in the meta viewer, but it does not have any associated bitmap data/mesh data etc. In cases where a tag is not actually used anywhere in a level, the resources for that tag may be left out of the map file to save space. When this happens it is not possible to extract the tag, however it may exist in another map instead.
